Turning houses into homes

To end homelessness we have to do more than simply provide a roof over someone’s head. We need to help people create places where they can thrive and can truly call home. That’s what Hope at Home sets out to achieve.

Some people who have previously experienced homelessness will already have furniture and other items they need to get started when moving into a Flagship-owned home. But many don’t, and those are the people Hope at Home is designed to help.

We supply packages of:

  • Furniture such as sofas, tables, chairs and beds
  • Large appliances like cookers, washing machines, fridge/freezers and televisions
  • Small appliances such as toasters, kettles, crockery, cutlery and vacuum cleaners
  • Bedding
  • Carpet and other flooring

The people we help don’t just have to take whatever is on offer. They receive a catalogue and can choose the colours, styles, and finishes that they like most. We think this helps people build a sense of ownership and pride in their new surroundings.

It’s having an impact

From April 2023 to March 2024 we supported 418 people – including 154 children – through Hope at Home. Just over half - 53% - later told us they would have gone without if Hopestead had not been around or able to help. Furthermore, 93% feel more positive about the future and more settled in their new home, and 50% felt more able to manage their finances and household.

Warren’s Story

Warren faced a sudden and serious health condition that resulted in long-term health issues, leaving him unable to work. As a result, he lost both his home and his family. After undergoing extensive rehabilitation, Warren was discharged and moved in with his sibling’s family, sleeping in their front room. While he was grateful for their care, the situation placed strain on the entire household and left him without privacy or personal space.
Recognising the need for stability, Flagship offered Warren a new home. His family rallied around him, using social media to gather essential household items, including white goods and furniture. However, he was still missing a bed and a wardrobe with a mirror—something particularly important to him, as he struggled to see well enough to shave each morning.
Hopestead stepped in to provide Warren with a comfortable bed and the much-needed wardrobe and mirror, ensuring he had everything required to settle into his new home.

“My new home has given me my life back. I am looking forward to the freedom of moving around my own space. My recovery can really start from now, as it’s easier to exercise and have health professionals visit me at home.”

PAUL’S STORY

Paul faced a challenging period in his life when severe mental health issues led to his hospitalisation. As a result, he was unable to continue renting privately and lost his home. For several years, Paul lived in temporary sheltered accommodation, where he received the therapy and support needed to stabilise his mental health.
With significant progress in his therapy, Paul was ready to live independently again. When a Flagship property became available, Hopestead provided him with the essential items he needed to settle into his home.
Paul expressed that the assistance he received was instrumental in his continued recovery. The support not only helped him manage the practical aspects of moving but also provided emotional relief, allowing him to focus on his mental health. Having a stable and secure home has been a key factor in his overall well-being.
Feeling positive about the future, Paul has now joined a local MIND group as a volunteer. He hopes to use his experiences to help others going through similar mental health chal-lenges. With a safe and comfortable home, Paul’s outlook on life has significantly im-proved, and he is eager to support others on their journey to recovery.

It’s standing out

Hope at Home’s impact certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed. The programme was named Homelessness Project of the Year at the UK Housing Awards in November 2024, ahead of nine other shortlisted projects from around the country.

Judges described Hope at Home as the most innovative project they had seen that year.
They said: “Hopestead has identified a gap in the provision that too many homeless people are being dropped into empty properties.
“They worked out that when you fully furnish a home, people want to stay there. It’s a vote of confidence in its residents, a recognition that they deserve to be trusted with brand new goods.”
